Our Namesake.
Our name, Theseus, is linked to the very earliest days of Machine Learning and AI because we believe that without knowing an industry’s history you can’t change the future.
On the left is Claude Shannon, who earned his MD and PHD in 1940. He’s pictured next to a device that he personally designed and constructed in 1950. The machine marked a very early instance of machine learning technology. It was a mechanical mouse that Shannon dubbed ‘Theseus’, inspired by the ancient Greek hero who used a thread to find his way out of the Minotaur’s labyrinth, which possessed the ability to retain its path thanks to the use of telephone relay switches, laying the foundation for Artificial Intelligence.
